Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the right Psychologist?

Finding the right Psychologist is an important part of getting the most out of therapy, but we know it’s not always easy. The connection you have with your Psychologist plays a big role in how helpful therapy will be. When you feel comfortable and supported, it’s easier to work through challenges and make positive changes. Because you’re unique, we’ll try to match you with the right Psychologist.

What can I expect from my Psychologist?

We have an experienced team of skilled and compassionate Psychologists who offer support to adults, adolescents, children, couples and families. You can be confident that you’ll receive a professional, personalised service from people who genuinely care. We’re committed to working alongside you, tailoring each session to your needs and goals.

We know that seeing a Psychologist for the first time can feel daunting. It’s completely normal to feel a little uncertain about what you want to say and where to start. We’re here to gently guide you every step of the way, helping you get the most out of your time with us.

How long are sessions?

Your sessions will generally be 50 minutes long.

What can I expect at my first session?

Your first session is really about giving your Psychologist the chance to get to know you - your story, your background, and what’s brought you here. They may gently ask about different parts of your life, like family, work, or recent experiences. This isn’t about judgment - it’s simply to help them understand your world, so they can shape the support around what you need most.

Sometimes, your Psychologist might also suggest completing a few questionnaires. These are just another way to help build a clearer picture of how you’ve been feeling - things like your mood, sleep, or daily routines. It’s all part of creating a safe, thoughtful, and helpful space for you.

And if it would help you feel more comfortable, consider bringing a support person along to your sessions. During your first session, your Psychologist may:

  • Explain how your privacy and confidentiality will be protected
  • Share their thoughts on how you might work best together
  • Discuss with you the number and frequency of sessions you may need
  • Give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about treatment

What will my treatment journey look like?

What your sessions look like will depend on what you and your Psychologist decide works best for you. Often, therapy involves gently exploring your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and how these might be affecting your wellbeing, your relationships, and your daily life. Where it’s helpful, you might also spend some time reflecting on past experiences to better understand how your current concerns may have developed.

The aim is to help you build insight, develop new strategies, and feel more empowered in navigating life’s challenges - always at a pace that feels right for you.

How much do sessions cost?

At ICCP, we aim to make quality mental health care as accessible and affordable as possible. While each of our Psychologists sets their own fees, many choose to offer rates below the Australian Psychological Society’s recommended schedule, and some offer concession rates upon request. Fees for a 50-minute psychological therapy session with a Registered or Clinical Psychologist typically range from $230 to $280. Additional fees may apply for initial consultations, weekend, family, or couple sessions.

Medicare Rebates
All our Registered and Clinical Psychologists are Medicare providers. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of approximately $98 to $145 per session, for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Rebates apply for both in-person and telehealth appointments.

Private Health Insurance Rebates
Many private health insurance funds provide a rebate for services provided by Psychologists. Please contact your health fund prior to your appointment to find out whether your existing policy covers services provided by your chosen Psychologist.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?

We get it - sometimes life throws a curveball, and your plans might need to shift. If you need to cancel or reschedule your session, just let us know at least 48 hours in advance. This gives us the chance to offer the spot to someone else who may be waiting for support.

Here’s how our cancellation policy works:

  • Less than 24 hours’ notice – the full session fee will apply
  • 24 to 48 hours’ notice – 50% of the session fee will apply
  • More than 48 hours’ notice – no fee at all

As per Medicare and private health rules, cancellation fees can’t be claimed back.

We appreciate your understanding - it helps us keep things running smoothly for everyone.
